THE WEB - Trains

Trains is my new album 2011. The tracks were made from June to September.
The concept behind Trains is movement, change & emotions, exchange & cooperation, and crossing borders - all tracks are collab tracks. THE WEB vs ... means that these are not simply remixes of tracks from friends, but the results of the attempt to do a new track with sound-samples from a friend's track that i like and inspired me to transform it into a Trains track. As an umbrella, all these Trains-tracks share some sounds and feelings i put into them them.

In the last two of the album, there are no samples from existing tracks. In Train Of Thoughts my friend CXXXVI wrote and performed the vocals to this track, and so she gave it the title too. For Cargo my friend Leslie Von Dees provided me with tasty fresh sound loops and a draft of the track, and i added, changed and rearraged the sounds to the final Trains track.

THE WEB - Intruders

There's not much to say about this one - it's banging TECHNO, have fun!

This track was made in summer 2009. When was working on a series of remixes of some 80's tracks (REMIXED),  i was in the mood for doing a pounding oldschool techno 4 to the floor, for a change. I did this very quickly and i didn't too much adjustements on it, cuz it should be raw. Instead i made another track by remixing the first version.

THE WEB - The Web Experience

So finally, this now is my first series of tracks. They were produced from june to october 2006. It was until Summer 2006 that i didn't have my own PC, cuz there was no need, i always could use the ones of the friends i lived with if i wanted to. However, it never came to my mind doing music tracks on their PC. But when i finally bought my own cuz i lived alone for a while, i decided also to make music with it so i made sure i bought a powerful one and pimped it with enough RAM. It's so easy nowadays to make music only with a PC - they have enough power, memory etc. and the music itself went digital anyway in terms of handling and storage so i thought why buying a lot of equipment and then discover that you don't really have the time to really learn and work with it, when you have easy to use computer programs and almost every possibility with respect to sounds ...e.g. Roland drum machines? yes, of course, every Type, in one box... and they sound like they should - if not you have effects and switches à gogo to take you there. So all you nead is a good ear - it's similar to cooking, with the advantage that you can always readily correct if you got too much salt or pepper in the soup :-)

With the first track, Web Beatz No.1 (how obvious...), i explored what i can do with the more classic drum sounds - that is, without Roland drummachine sounds, but approaching the typical techno feeling in the track. The second one started with playing around with a bell-like synth sound - told you before in the post THE WEB - Exerz EP. Shine combines a classic electrobeat with a pounding ride of distorted 909 bassdrums to reach the desired driving force. Bits Bites 1.1 and Help Line are classic oldschool 4tothefloor techno tracks. In Skyscraping i tried not to use a single synth sound, but approaching the desired sounds with multi-modified noise samples. Rocka Industries is a quite special beast, i guess "electronic punkrock breakbeat chaos" would be an adequate description... After this, a soft landing is needed - this is provided by the 2step track Love You. The closing track, Potpürree, is a reprise & mash up of four of the Web Experience tracks - Exerz, Shine, Skyscraping and Help Line.

As a bonus i added a track that i made back in 1993 (Sleepless I - Over And Off) with the equipment of a colleague that had an EBM Band (called "Krompholz", only locally known). This was amazing: he showed me in short how the samlper, drummachines, synth & sequencer worked, gave me a key to their band room and told me on what days they were not in, and that i could go then anytime and do my stuff, if i liked. WOW! i played around a lot but then i also wanted to take something with me so i produced a proper track and recorded it to a minidisc (...maybe you remember them?;-) and from this to tape. That's where i ripped it now, so the audio might not be best quality... if something somehow sounds familiar to you: the (mid-)bassline is a sped up sample from the start of Pink Floyd's "One Of These Days" ;-)

THE WEB - REMIXED

As you can see with Magnetfisch's Raumstift, Energy 52's Café del Mar and Koenig Cylinder's Carousel, i also like to do remixes besides my own tracks. This all started in may 2008 as i listened to the first album of 80ies new wave band Rheingold. I came about the track Pirata, a very nice instrumental piece of synthpop, which i had heard before but didn't know it was from Rheingold. I thought wow, what a track - but what is missing here a bit when you've gone through the area of 90ies techno/electronic sound is bass and drums... Well, why not try to pimp this track a little bit? I took samples from the track, modified them slightly, rearranged them and added a heavier beat and basslines. That was that! Pirata THE WEB style :-) Since the process was fun and i was pleased with the result, i've done this with a few more tracks - most tracks are from the 80ies. I tried to keep the remixes quite close to the original so that the original groove/feeling of the track is not spoiled. ...bit an excepion to this is Trip In the Air (and Another...), where i transformed the Oldfield track "Foreign Affair" (feat. Maggie Reilly) to a new one.

Here you can download the results. But note that these are all inofficial remixes, so be careful what you do with them (copyright hell...) ;-)
The dubbed remix of Pink Floyd's Money (Money / Shocked) can be found on my Mouse Costumes EP in full glory.

THE WEB - The monoton Water Suite

After doing a few remixes on some 80ies tracks (REMIXED) again in spring 2009 and Café del Mar remixed in summer 2009 - and an "artistic break" in autumn, it was about time for a series of new tracks (december 2009 / january 2010).

First i had no idea what it should be. But when i came about playing around with these „Korg MS-10 drum sounds“ from monoton X and monoton rem X a little bit i felt like building yet another track with them. I especially liked the drop like sounds, so i wanted to modify and use them extensively - pictures of water appeared in my head and i began to work on an „electronic water track“. How obvious to change the working title „monoton Z“ to Electric Water.
I completed this track and used the basis for yet another track. i was in a flow... underwater... submarines... – yes! sonar sounds are cool! they have to come in too;  and „monoton T“ became Submarine. After dark there must be light, so i came to a correspondig alternative version of Submarine: Dubmarine. In this track, light (dur) changes into dark (moll) and vice versa.

Since these tracks are similar in their sound, theme etc. i came to the idea of coupling them together as one underwater space techno opera, and what was missing was a closing track. It was clear that after all this driving sharp beats it would have to be something smooth and downtempo. I called this track Heartbeat of Poseidon. ...it’s becoming quite obvious when you listen to it;-) The monoton Water Suite was completed. But because i liked the drum only part in the middle of Heartbeat of Poseidon so much and wanted to use it at higher speed too, i transformed the downtempo track to Poseidon Highway and added it to the album.

Note that for these tracks, not a single drummachine sound was used. All drum sounds are  sounds sampled from a Korg MS-10 and modified as needed.

THE WEB - Exerz EP

Exerz is one of my first tracks dating back to 2006. It is the second track of the album i worked on in the sommer holidays 2006 (The Web Experience). I was experimenting with synth sounds and came around to a church bell -like sound - one from a church quite far away... And I found that a fat buzzing breakbeat was very suitable to carry this bell sounds. With these two elements, the exercise began - and that was it: Exerz was born.

In summer 2008 I did another mix down of Exerz. I was still very pleased with this track, so I decided to do a remix. This remix version follows the original quite closely; the bell sounds are tuned a bit lower, the beats are slightly enriched. The alternative version Zerex finally is entirely made up of samples from the remix, with a pounding, straight 4/4 beat and added space synth atmosphere.

For the video of Exerz and Zerex (and title cover of the EP) I used pictures of a "3-dimensional" painting that I made 1991/92 (the title of this painting is "Purzelbaum" = somersault. A somersault for your eyes... ;-).

THE WEB - Mouse Costumes

"Mouse Costumes" is my most recent work (summer 2010). It is a four track concept EP dedicated to the globalised financial markets and the consequences of absent control and supervision - the hype in making money out of money i.e. out of nothing, the suffering from the delusion that speculative bubbles will grow forever, and the surprise when the inherent crashes reoccur (dotcom bubble... real estate bubble...).

For the vulture capitalists and stock exchange gamblers I chose the picture of the wolf in sheep's clothing. Not quite... - to be adequately surreal it became "cats in mouse costumes". And with this, the acting like an addict, which is obviously a feature of many traders in the financial markets, came in too: Here's the link to the famous sketch from Monty Python's Flying Circus, where a drug addict (J.Cleese) is interviewed in a serious TV-show - the only difference is that the drug is acting like a mouse, wearing a mouse costume and eating cheese... ("The Mouse Problem", click to listen on youtube)

Money is the central topic, and because I always liked Pink Floyd and their song "Money", I decided to update and transform it to modern financial times... There are two different tracks: The aggressive opener of the EP, Money / Business Transactions, a heavy pounding techno track that really rocks the house and sets the pace for the traders today. The third track Money / Shocked (the crisis has arrived...) is a spacy downtempo dub-techno version. For me this is the best track I've made so far. (Unfortunately, these two tracks still are unofficial versions of the original "Money", so there's no preview here.)
Just before the crisis, there is of course a ralley at the stock exchange, everybody goes Mad. In this breakbeat track you'll be blindsided by the beat from time to time. The last track is the title track Mouse Costumes. It comes in a tribal techno/trance style - depicting what seems to be the motto after all the recent crises: Don't change too much, go on - dressing up as mice, collecting money.... (Preview see below).

In October 2011, .machiine, a friend on youtube who is doing remixes / reworks of different tracks did a remix of the title track Mouse costumes. He did a second mix, too, which is essentially part2, it is best to listen to both in one go. I enclude this now in my EP

THE WEB - monoton

The "monoton"-series were created between october 2008 and april 2009. All tracks follow the same principle: They are all based on a central audio track with sounds from a famous vintage analog synthesizer - the Korg MS-10. I extracted these sounds from a tape dating back to 1994/95.

Once on a saturday in late summer 1994 there was one of these flea markets in my home town Winterthur. I was in the pub when a colleague busted in, came straight to me and excitedly asked me if I knew what a Korg MS-10 is and if I wanted to buy one - if yes I would have to hurry because he found one at a stand of the flea market, for only 300 bucks (Swiss Franks)! Although back then I was only DJing from time to time, but was not doing my own music, had no drum machines and other equipment, I knew this was a golden opportunity I shouldn't pass up - techno and house music had become popular and the prices for old analog synths nobody was interested in a few years ago had risen to astronomical levels. So I immediately went out to the stand and bought this vintage device. Back home, I explored the sounds of it in depth, also because I had no other instrument that competed for attention. I experimented with the patch cords and tried every connection. "Sick and industrial sounds and lots of dirt is what the MS can do at it's best" (www.sequencer.de) - oh yes, that's exactly what I like. Everytime I had found a sound that I liked I recorded a few minutes of it on tape. Since I always wanted to do my own electronic music tracks but back then couldn't afford the equipment I decided to give the Korg MS-10 to my friend Sauri, former DJ from Winterthur (DJ Das Sausen) and drummer of the band "men from s.p.e.c.t.r.e" (superb instrumental music! - visit www.men-from-spectre.org).

Thank god I had recorded this tape - finally, 14 years later I was able to use this stuff for my own electronic music tracks. After I made the Freeze!-series and a few inofficial remixes of oldies-but-goldies from the 80ies (REMIXED) I wanted to do something more "raw", stripped down, classic techno, so this old Korg MS-10 tape was very wellcome. I used the sounds on it as a basis for the tracks (definig theme/mood, suitable beat and speed), added one or two drummachines, an additional synth- or bassline or a few effects - and that was it. Since the Korg MS-10 is monophonic I used the working title "monoton" for this series of tracks.

The tracks on "monoton I" vary from oldschool technohouse acid-like style (monoton 5 - doppelstern), wavy rocking breakbeat (wave roller) and even friendly downtempo (cleanup) to raw industrial machine beat (alien tank). In monoton X there's no drummachine, all the drum sounds came from Korg MS-10.

"monoton II" contains alternative versions of several tracks from "monoton I"; the tracks are renamed so that the original as well as the new version are visible. alien tank for example grew to alien tanks in the storm, a three part version with one tank in the beginning and another one returning to the windy, empty battlefield (middle part) at the end. A peculiar element in several tracks here is the different tempo of the beat while keeping the original tempo of the Korg MS-10 sound track, in a ratio 4:3 (pulsating source of radio, little jumper, planet easy). In planet easy such a change in tempo occurs in the middle of the track, deviding it in a living slow and a living fast part. In the spacy quasi-stellar radio source, the effect of slowing down is reached by a 3/4 echo-effect and a different beat - the tempo remains the same as in the 4/4-trance-style original monoton 6 - quasar.
